Planned ban on supplying some single use plastic and polystyrene items

It is planned that from 1 October 2023, a government ban on supplying certain single use plastic and polystyrene items to end users will come into force in England. You can find the latest information on the government website.

The types of items that may be affected include plates, bowls, trays, containers, cutlery and balloon sticks. You can find more detail of the planned ban on the gov.uk website; bear in mind that the legislation is yet to be finalised.

The full guidance from Government on what this means for businesses hasn’t been released yet. However, there are a few things you can do now to start getting ready:

  • Take stock of the plastic and polystyrene items you currently use in your business. Identify which items are in the scope of the ban and plan accordingly.
  • Register with Business Companion. Once you’ve provided basic details of your business, they’ll notify you of any changes in Trading Standards legislation that are relevant to you.
  • Make contact with Business Sheffield. Our expert advisors can give advice and support on sustainable business practices as well as any financial impact that replacing banned items could have for you. Call 0114 224 5000, or email businesssheffield@sheffield.gov.uk
